Can we fill a 350 person theater in 12 days? Oh God no. As I write this, the guerrilla marketing on poles and cork boards around the city, the cross posting on larger social media accounts, and the word of mouth has the Partiful registrants up to 4 people including me and maybe Julian. I’ve made a huge mistake.

So let me eat the cost of the rental and let’s just hang? Doors at 5pm on Weds. June 3rd, Movie at 6, drinks after. The theatre in the Library on the parkway is a beautiful space and I’ve got some fun surprises in store for the 3+ of you that will be in attendance. Bring a friend or 50 and let’s watch a melancholy movie together.

Film Festivals and Finding Communities while Line Sitting

idk this guy but we’re now friends on letterboxd and that means something.

Remember when I ripped the Masters’ Logo off for my annual golf tournament? Well hey look I did it again with the Cannes logo above, cool? Probably not. Anywho, the French film festival just wrapped up and this marks the 35th straight year I didn’t go, but I’m feeling maybe a trip next year with Nate. I did go to the New York Film Festival two falls ago and I wanted to reminisce about an experience there. I didn’t have any special pass, I didn’t get to walk any of the red carpets, and I actually didn’t have any tickets but I did have time and patience. I got in line around 4am on a rainy Saturday morning outside of Alice Tully Hall in the UWS for a the 7pm US premier of The Brutalist (which should’ve won best picture btw) hoping that someone in the industry that was gifted tickets had something better to do that night and their ticket would end up at the box office.

I brought a book (ha), an iPad, headphones, and a sketchbook to pass the time. I didn’t touch any of it because talking to strangers with something in common is a lot of fun and no one does it anymore. I am absolutely not going to make a case for picking up smoking but there’s a super interesting study by the national institute of health called “Influence of Social Connections on Smoking Behavior” where they compare the decline of smoking with the decay of the art of small talk (a prop helps). I’d link it here but for every extra link I put in this newsletter I think the odds this email lands in junk grows and I can’t afford that especially after eating the venue fee.

2007 iPhone release at KoP

If you know me you know a full day or overnight line is something I’ve had plenty of experience dating back to the early 2000s camping out for an XBOX 360 through last year with Kelsey in the SNL standby line. Every single time it flys by and maybe the real XBOX was the friends we made along the way <3.

So next time you’re out opening the weather app or calculator on your phone while you wait for a mutual friend so you don’t have to make eye contact with anyone at the coffee shop or concert or birthday party just compliment someones shirt or something, we aren’t making enough friends and we aren’t seeing the ones we have enough. A simple “Bing Bong” or “Go Knicks” should get the job done.

Cool. You made it to the end.
Stick around for the next one. Register for an event. Let me know if you’re interested in hosting, partnering, sponsoring, ghost writing, anything.

Text your friends, make some plans, hang out more.
