2025 ‘Stache Classic Opening Remarks
Don’t cry because the Masters are over, smile because the Movember Masters* registration is open. Get in on early bird pricing.
This weekend I got a bunch of texts with pictures from friends wearing old Movember Masters hats while watching the other Masters golf tournament and it warmed my heart. Seeing the hats and shirts in the wild makes me feel like we’ve actually started to build something here, but in reality it’s really just a dope logo isn’t it? I’ll still use that logo on shirts and hats at the event this year but let me try to explain why I’ve ruined a good thing by making the new logo and quietly changing the name last year to the ‘Stache Classic.

Why? Two main reasons, first I am ambitious enough to want this thing to be bigger than the golf tournament and while the mustache masters logo is objectively slick, it felt gimmicky and not really its own thing. The second is, a 2 minute Google could’ve shown me that theres a movember fundraising team called the mustache masters, and two movember golf tournaments on the east coast called the Stachters and mustache masters respectively.
What? For a name I wanted something that was golf tournament adjacent, so I had championship, open, cup, invitational, and classic. I did google this time and saw the “MO-pen” already exists as a movember fundraiser, and the “men’s cup” felt to on the nose, thus ‘Stache Classic was born. While it doesn’t techinally rhyme the repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words, "Stache" and "Classic", share that strong short-A sound (stAsh / clAssic), which gives them that satisfying sonic link. Turns out this nice mouth feel is called assonance. Anyway, it also feels appropriate for a Golf tournament but not exclusive to a golf tournament.
The, probably worse, logo. I kept the colors, I kept the mustache, I kept the idea of a flag, and like any former consultant I tried to over engineer some symbolism. The red flag is a reminder to stop and ask for help. Raise a red flag when you aren’t feeling right or when you see a friend acting different. Too many men bottle up emotions until it’s too late.
The tournament details. If you’ve participated in the past I don’t have to sell you on it being fun. If you haven’t, I’ll try. It’ll be a shotgun start at noon (30 min earlier!) on Saturday October 24th at Princeton Country Club (< an hour drive from Philly and right off the NJT from NYC). If you don’t golf, I like to say it’s the only tournament where probably 25% of the folks playing don’t own clubs, and it’s the only tournament you can pay to win. If you REALLY don’t play, volunteers are needed too, please reach out, that’s fun too. I’m also looking for tournament sponsors and in kind donations. Last year we raised about 16k on the day and with corporate matching that turned into almost $30,000 for men’s health.
